Pack Safari Self Drive Tour Suggestion - 2005 / 6
Windhoek - Victoria Falls (21 days)
This is a sensational tour around Northern Namibia, which extends across the Caprivi Strip to Zambia. The vast desert plains of the Namib with its gigantic sand dunes and gravel plains stand in contrast to the lush vegetation of the Caprivi and tropical Zambia. Africa‘s wildlife is the focal point of this trip. The gigantic Victoria Falls form the highlight at the end of the tour. The Etosha, Bwabwata and Chobe National Parks are home to some large African game. This tour covers a distance of 3800 kilometres.
Day 1:
Arrival at Windhoek International Airport and receipt of rental car. Afterwards drive into town to Hotel Pension Palmquell, a true oasis in the outskirts of Windhoek. Jonker Afrikaner, the founder of Windhoek, and the first missionaries already used the springs in this area to maintain their gardens. The huge palm trees and lush garden of the pension still benefit from the abundance of water. The afternoon may be spent relaxing at the hotel or exploring Namibia’s capital.

Day 2:
Drive to the south via Rehoboth, capital of the Baster people. The luxurious Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch is nestled amidst picturesque Kalahari landscape. The spacious bungalows are scattered unobtrusively around the main lodge area ensuring plenty of privacy and exquisite views. The optional afternoon scenic drive displays a kaleidoscope of true African colours red sand, yellow grass, green trees contrasted by deep blue skies. The occasional Springbok, Oryx antelope and ostrich dwell in this dune landscape. The wide veranda welcomes to enjoy are refreshing drink, a pool and extensive library are at guests disposal. An optional walk is also offered.

Day 3:
Travel further south to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. Along the way the quiver tree forest may be visited. Afterwards arrival Cañon Roadhouse, which borders the Fish River Canyon Park. The former farm house was converted into a pleasant restaurant and rustic bar, comfortable and well constructed rooms were added.

Day 4:
Drive to Farm Tiras, which is situated in the beautiful landscape of the southern Tiras Mountains. Visitors will get an insight on the cattle farming activities as this is a fully functioning farm. Accommodation is in two guest rooms and guest can enjoy personal attention, which will make this stay a memorable one.

Day 5:
On the optional excursions visitors benefit from the passionate presentations on this desert terrain plants such as unique succulents, “living stones” and “bushman candles”, quiver trees but also bushman paintings, rock sculptures and the former ox wagon trail from Lüderitz inland make this an interestingly diverse destination.

Day 6:
Drive along Namib Naukluft Park to Zebra River Lodge. En route a visit to Duwisib Castle takes one back in time. The intimate Zebra River Lodge is situated approximately 90 kilometres from Sesriem amongst the desolate Tsaris mountains. Marianne and Rob Field create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Day 7:
Today may be spent at leisure exploring the Tsaris Mountains. One may choose from hiking trails of various lengths or partake in the optional drives. A small swimming pool invites to relax.

Day 8:
Opportunity of visit Sossusvlei, boasting the highest dunes in the world. The dramatic colours, enhanced by the rising and setting sun, may be experienced. A 4WD shuttle is available for the last stretch to Sossusvlei as thick dune sand blocks the road. Afterwards a visit to Sesriem Canyon is recommended. The Desert Homestead is situated a mere 30 km from the entrance to the world famous Sossusvlei. The 16 tastefully appointed rock chalets afford guests sweeping views of the distant Nubib Mountains from the comfort of their beds. The décor hints at a bygone era of Namibian farm living with enamel basins, brass taps, beautifully draped mosquito nets and polished concrete floors. Traditional farm cooked meals, with a little modern flair, are prepared using organically grown herbs and vegetables from our garden. Breakfasts and dinners are served alfresco on the veranda, with light temptations being available throughout the day at The Supply Store and Coffee Shop. The Supply Store is reminiscent of an old trading post, stocking everything from tobacco and biltong to ‘tuisgemaakte beskuit’. Various riding safaris are offered.

Day 9:
Continue through the Kuiseb Canyon and across the Namib Desert to the Atlantic Coast. Along the way the ancient Welwitschia mirabilis desert plant and moon landscape may be visited. At Sam’s Giardino Hotel guest can enjoy excellent service and Swiss expertise. The small hotel comprises of ten rooms each facing the lovingly tended garden. In the evenings romantic candle light and a crackling fire invite to stay in and escape the mist which often covers the coastal town in a cool blanket. On request a delicious five course dinner is prepared and wide variety of selected wines delight the taste buds.

Day 10:
Time for activities in and around Swakopmund. An abundance of optional activities are on offer, ranging from a boat cruise and scenic flights to an action filled quad biking adventure and paragliding.

Day 11:
The journey continues along the Atlantic Coast into Damaraland. En route the gigantic seal colony at Cape Cross may be visited. Twyfelfontein Lodge lies directly at the historical site of Twyfelfontein and offers a magnificent view on the Aba-Huab landscape. The 56 en-suite double rooms and main area were built from natural stone and painted in colours harmonising with the surrounding rock formations to blend into the mountainside. The Twyfelfontein area is renowned for some of the best examples of rock engravings and paintings in Southern Africa. The beautiful walking trail to the Twyfelfontein springs is only 10 minutes away. This offers the visitors the opportunity to experience this walk at sunset.

Day 12:
Travel to Etosha National Park renowned for its diversity of wild life. En route visits to the Petrified Forest, boasting over 200 million year old tree trunks and the Vingerklip a curious conglomerate formation in the picturesque Ugab river terraces, are possible. Etosha Safari Camp is situated only a short distance from the southern park gate. The 22 uniquely designed safari bungalows are spacious and the large veranda affords a beautiful view over the thorn bush savannah. Meals are served in a rustic yet tastefully decorated restaurant. A large swimming pool and lodge-own internet-café are at guests' disposal.

Day 13:
Enjoy a day of game viewing in Etosha National Park, while on the outlook for lions, elephants, eland and damara-dikdik (the largest and smallest antelope respectively), giraffes and many more.

Day 14:
Another day of game viewing across Etosha National Park. Shortly before sunset, head to the eastern park gate. Etosha Aoba Lodge is nestled deep within a Tamboti forest creating the feeling of being alone in the African bush. The ten thatched bungalows blend well into surrounding woodland. While enjoying a delicious meal on the open sided main deck, one may experience the sights and sounds of Africa.

Day 15:
Travel past the legendary Lake Otjikoto and past the mining town of Tsumeb. Frans Indongo Lodge is situated 40 km north of Otjiwarongo. The lodge is tastefully decorated with traditional Ovambo artefacts to resemble local village yet is much larger and greener. Rooms and bungalows are stylish and light. The owner, Dr. Frans Indongo, is one of the most admired and successful businessmen in Namibia. The fact that he is Ovambo, makes his success so much more admirable, as his people were oppressed by apartheid rule until Namibia’s independence in 1990. The hosts create a welcoming atmosphere; a large patio invites to relax and enjoy the African wilderness and spectacular sunsets. Antelopes, zebras, gnus and sometimes even rhinos quench their thirst at the near by waterhole. The rare roan antelope roams the bush surrounding the lodge.

Today may be spent at leisure, optional activities include visits to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, Rare and Endangered Species Trust, Waterberg excursion or game walks and drives

Day 17:
Drive via Otjiwarongo to Okahandja, where one of the exquisite wood crafters’ market is visited. The journey concludes in Eningu The Clayhouse Lodge, which is situated in the outskirts of the Kalahari. The lodge was constructed from hand made clay bricks and natural material. Tranquil surroundings, a swimming pool and outdoor whirlpool and marked walking trails topped by outstanding cuisine ensure utmost relaxation to conclude an eventful trip.

Day 18:
Time to relax and reenergise on Eningu. From the flat roof top the most spectacular African sunsets can be enjoyed.

Drive to Windhoek International Airport, return of rental car and return flight.
